Hand baggage
Hand Baggage Restrictions
If your airline allows it, you may take more than one item of hand baggage through security control. Items must not exceed:
56cm (22in) tall
45cm (17.7in) wide
25cm (10in) deep
To save time, we advise you to place only valuables and items you need for the flight into your hand baggage.
Liquids
No liquids, gels, creams, perfumes and sprays of more than 100 ml/100g. Any liquids of 100ml or less must be carried in a small re-sealable plastic bag.
The plastic bag must not exceed one litre capacity per passenger – that’s around half the size of a standard A4 piece of paper and it must be re-sealable. The bag can
contain several items of 100ml/100g or less but must not be too cluttered in order to allow security officers to carry out thorough checks.
Musical instruments
Large musical instruments will be allowed as an extra item of hand luggage but they will have to be screened separately.
Large electrical items/laptops
Laptops and other complex items of electrical equipment have to be removed from hand luggage and screened separately.
No sharp items allowed in hand luggage.
At the Airport
Plastic bag x-ray
The re-sealable plastic bag will have to be removed from your hand baggage and x-rayed separately.
X-Ray Scanners
Manchester Airport has been conducting a trial of imaging technology (also known as body scanners) in Terminal 2 since the end of 2009. From February 1st 2010, legislation from the UK Government directed airports with this technology available to use it as part of normal security procedures – any selected passenger who refuses to use the scanner will be denied travel.
After security control
Passengers are able to buy liquids including drinks and perfumes in retail outlets after security control.
Travelling to the USA Passengers travelling to the USA may be subject to further checks at the gate before boarding.
Entry Requirements – ESTA
All US-bound air passengers from the UK must complete an Electronic System for Travel Authorisation form (ESTA), which takes up to 72-hours to be approved by the US Department of Homeland Security, giving flyers prior approval for entry to the United States. Passengers without a valid ESTA will be refused travel to the USA. The ESTA form must be completed online, and replaces the Green I-94 card, which passengers have previously filled in on their flight into the US under the Visa Waiver Programme (VWP) that allows eligible British Citizen passport holders to visit the US for up to 90 days.

At the airport
To ensure your journey is a smooth one, please ensure that you read the latest regulations about what you can and cannot take on board the aircraft.
Hand baggage

We would remind all passengers that each airline has their own policy regarding the amount of hand baggage allowed on their aircraft and we strongly recommend that information regarding this is sought directly from the Airline before travel.
Liquids
Passengers will be allowed to take liquids, gels and pastes of 100mls or less in their hand baggage. These items must be contained within a small, transparent re-sealable plastic bag, which will have to be removed from their hand baggage and x-rayed separately.
To save time and expense please come prepared with your own correct sized plastic bag, however you can purchase plastic bags in the terminals.
Plastic bags are sold in ALL Terminals with two bags available for £1, if you forget to bring your own. Plastic bag dispensers are conveniently located in multiple sites around check-in and security alongside coin change machines.

Any other item of a similar consistency.
If you are in doubt on any of the liquid, gels or pastes restrictions then pack them into your suitcase when you check-in your hold luggage.
Large electrical items / Laptops
Laptops and other complex items of electrical equipment have to be removed from hand luggage and screened separately.
WHAT DOES NOT CHANGE
Passengers will continue to be allowed to pack liquids in the bags that they check-in.
Medicines and Baby Foods
Passengers will also be allowed to carry in their hand luggage medicines and dietary requirements including baby foods, for use during the flight.
Please note that; you may be asked for proof that these items are needed.
Parents WILL be asked to sample baby milk and food and also those people with dietary requirements (these can be any size).
Passengers will be able to buy liquids including drinks and perfumes either in an EU airport shop after security control, or on board an aircraft operated by an EU airline. If they are sold in a special sealed bag, passengers must not open them before they are screened otherwise the contents may be confiscated at the security checkpoint.
Don’t Forget – Before the airport
Before you arrive at Manchester Airport, make sure you have a valid passport (and visa where necessary) for your trip.
Many authorities require a passport that’s valid for at least six months from the time you fly.

On domestic flights, airlines now require to see appropriate photo identity. Please check with your airline about which forms of photo identity are acceptable.

Please check your ticket or travel itinerary, or contact your airline for advice on check in times. Generally, check in desks open 2-3 hours before the flight is due to depart.
X-Ray Scanners
From February 1st 2010, additional Government legislation came into operation at this airport. Any selected passenger who refuses to use the scanner will be denied travel. More information

The Irish aviation authorities have confirmed that Irish airspace will reopen today (Tuesday 4 May) from 13:00 after being closed from 07:00 due to volcanic ash that was drifting towards the country.
Around 12 flights were affected between Manchester Airport and Ireland during the airspace closure. Passengers who were due to travel to Ireland between 07:00 and 13:00 today should still check with their airline before coming to the airport.
Transatlantic flights that fly across Ireland were not affected because the ash contamination was not at altitude.
There is still no indication that this ash cloud will significantly affect UK airspace. Current advice from weather and air traffic control experts is that even if the ash cloud moves over northern parts of the UK mainland, contamination levels are likely to dilute so we expect Manchester Airport to remain operational.

Body scanners are being introduced at Heathrow Airport in line with UK Government requirements which state the following:
- “For the benefit of all passengers’ security, passengers may be required to be screened using body scanning equipment. Screening will be conducted by security officers acting on behalf of the airport operator. Images of passengers will not be saved.”
This has been introduced to improve security; refusal to comply will mean passengers cannot fly.
